Choice Theory/Reality Therapy (CT/RT) Practice Exam 2026 – Complete Prep Guide

The development of a therapeutic alliance is emphasized as integral for success in reality therapy because this approach prioritizes the relationship between the therapist and the client. A strong therapeutic alliance fosters an environment of trust and collaboration, which is essential for effective therapy. In reality therapy, the therapist acts as a supportive figure who guides the client in making choices that lead to satisfying relationships and fulfilling lives.

By focusing on building rapport and understanding the client's needs, the therapist can help the client explore their current behavior, identify unmet needs, and develop more effective strategies for addressing those needs. This collaborative and relational approach aligns with the core principles of choice theory, which posits that individuals have the power to choose their actions based on fulfilling relationships and personal goals.

Other options, such as focusing on medication or analyzing past traumas, do not align with the foundational elements of reality therapy, which eschews reliance on pharmacological treatments and emphasizes present choices over past experiences. Understanding psychological theories can be useful, but it is the practical application of these concepts in the context of the therapeutic relationship that holds the most significance in achieving meaningful change for clients in reality therapy.
